How Does an Electronic Health Record (EHR) System Boost Productivity?

ehrOwing to the ever-increasing influence of technology in most everyday processes, electronic media are becoming more widely used every day. Within the medical sector, many physicians are choosing to transfer from paper-based record keeping systems to EHRs. Apart from being indestructible and easy to manage, there are many other advantages to EHR systems that make them capable of boosting productivity and accuracy in record-keeping. Some of the most significant benefits of choosing electronic records over paper include the minimization of human error as well as a more cost-effective approach to data management.

 

EHRs and Productivity

Compared to paper records, EHRs are significantly faster, more accurate and can be accessed from virtually anywhere, provided there is internet access. When you train your staff to handle EHR systems, the expectation is to have them working more efficiently. EHR systems come with a wide range of features that can help streamline certain processes such as care documentation, medication administration and recording of financial data. They can also make physician and staff workflows more efficient by reducing costs for transcriptions through their speech recognition capabilities.

The New Care Plan for Retirement Homes

rhraIn 2010 the Retirement Home Regulation Act (RHRA) launched a totally new concept – documented care plans for Residents of retirement communities.

 

This is not to say that care planning was not being performed within retirement homes – far from it. However, variances in care practice, within multi-site organizations, and certainly among independent organizations were likely common occurrences. So the RHRA 2010 focused on defining, standardizing and improving the level of care.

 

With this aim in mind, the benefits would be two-fold: an improvement for the standard of care within retirement communities and a venue for Residents to participate in decision-making for their own care. A win-win for both.
